A Guide To Couples Therapy: What Happens & When to Go

It is normal to have problems in a romantic relationship. It is not like one can always agree or adjust with their partner. So, from little misunderstandings, things can take dramatic and unnecessary turns, for example, quarreling, not talking to each other, holding grudges, etc.

It happens with every single couple but if things take a dramatic turn, one should seek relationship counseling. It might sound odd but it is really helpful for couples who are having trouble with compatibility.

If you don’t have any idea about relationship counseling or couples therapy then don’t worry. The details about it are discussed below and also, when you may require couples’ therapy. First, take a look at what couples therapy actually is.

What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy is exactly like normal counseling where the therapist usually talks with one person who is having a problem. In relationship counseling, therapists talk with couples together. The counselor can also talk with them separately to understand their differences in point of view.

The therapist tends to ask some specific questions to the couples. Those answers usually reveal all the problems. After that, they try to find the root cause of that problem and suggest things accordingly.

When should a couple seek couple’s therapy?

Fighting with your partner is very normal. However, if you think it is more than often and both of you can’t come to any conclusion then you may seek relationship counseling.

When you feel that you are just stuck in a relationship and are trying to find a way out of it then you should definitely seek help. It can happen because of many things. For example, opinion differences, financial issues, family issues, etc.

It usually starts with a very small thing and then gets bigger over time. People think that they can just adjust to it or compromise when a problem occurs. However, that’s not the right way to deal with it.

A couple should have clear communication and discussion on the problem. Therefore, they will be able to find a solution on which they both can agree.

Do couples therapy actually work?

Yes, it works. However, no one can confirm it or guarantee any success rate. It is not like a magical therapy that works overnight. Therapists find the main cause of the problem through talking to them.

After that, they suggest a possible solution and the way they can work their problems out. The success rate of this therapy also highly depends on the will of the patients.

If a couple really wants to solve their problem then they can with the help of relationship therapy. It is just like other mental treatments. The main thing in it is the patients’ will and also expert guidance.

Conclusion

These are all the details about couples therapy or relationship counseling. It is not like you will need therapy for every problem you are having with your partner. There is a fine line between those who need therapy and those who don’t.

Moreover, people think going for therapy is shameful or humiliating, but it’s not. It is just like any other sickness but not physical. Everyone should take care of their relationships to stay healthy and happy.
