Your Essential Kitchen Organization Checklist

You may think that you need a large kitchen to have room for all of the essentials, but the truth is that many people are not using their kitchen storage space wisely. If you want to give your kitchen a refresh, you can start by making it more organized. With an organized kitchen, you can then see where you might want to make design upgrades like repainting cabinets or adding a new backsplash or appliances. This can be an upgrade you make when selling your house or moving into a new house

Declutter

The first task for organizing any room in your house is to get rid of what you don’t need. Decluttering might take some time, but it will be worth it. Areas that might be especially in need of decluttering are cups and mugs, pots and pans, food storage containers, and spices. If items are chipped or worn, toss them, and if you have multiples of the same or similar tools you may want to consider donating them. If you rarely use a blender or food processor, consider if you really want to keep it, otherwise give it a new home.

Move your spices into jars

Spices have a way of accumulating and creating unnecessary clutter in your kitchen. Spices in plastic containers and different-sized jars can be hard to use when you can’t find what you are looking for. Transferring your spices into mason jars that are the same size can then make room for storing them on a visible spice rack that hangs vertically near your stove. You can also store them on a half shelf, depending on the layout of your kitchen and the space that you have available.

Give your knives a useful home

If you have your knives stored in a drawer, consider storing them vertically to keep them in shape and make them easier to find. A magnetic knife holder can be placed on the wall near your stove, or you can go for a knife block. If you have limited space the magnetic holder can be an ideal choice. Either way, you can have your knives as a decorative and functional element in your kitchen.

Consider going vertical

Vertical storage isn’t only for knives and spices, pots and pans can be made more accessible with vertical storage. Depending on the height of your ceiling and your kitchen layout, you could hang pots and pans over a kitchen island, or even over your stove. A blank wall can have a rack added where you can also hang pots and pans or cooking utensils. Vertical shelves can add a new dimension of organization and can open up countertop and shelving space. When preparing a home to sell, adding vertical storage can make your kitchen seem lighter and more open.

Getting your kitchen organized is all about focusing on the essentials and making use of your space in creative ways. With a few changes, you can make it easier to find what you need and have room for all of your cooking projects.
